Translation and Validation Study for Posttraumatic Growth-Related Instruments in Nepali version | Global Cooperation Institute for Sustainable Cities (GCI) of Yokohama City University (YCU) (2017-18)

TPO alliance successfully completed the translation, contextualization, and validation of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGIs) for both children and adults in Nepal. Based on the preliminary analysis, both the PTGI-X and PTGI-C-R are relevant tools to assess positive psychological changes among people exposed to traumatic events. As Nepal is prone to natural disasters and other contextual issues such as conflict, traffic accidents, and other day-to-day hardships; therefore, these tools can be used in other parts of the country after quick adaptation. In the FGDs, many study participants reported that they had experienced positive psychological changes after the 2015 Nepal earthquakes. They also reported that most of the items included in both PTGI-X and PTGI-C-R are relevant in the Nepali context but they require cultural adaptation.

Most of the prior studies conducted with populations exposed to adversity in Nepal reported low rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to depression and anxiety. The low rate of PTSD could be due to the huge stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and other cultural factors. As this study was conducted with a small group of the population; therefore, the results from this study may not be generalized. Hence, we recommend a large study to assess PTSD and PTGI among the population affected by the 2015 Nepal earthquakes.
